NIKOLE HANNAH-JONES聽is a MacArthur Genius for 鈥渞eshaping national conversations around education reform.鈥澛燬he is the creator of the聽New York Times Magazine鈥檚 鈥淭he 1619 Project,鈥� about the history and lasting legacy of American slavery, for which her powerful introductory essay was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for commentary. She's also won a Peabody, two George Polk awards, and the National Magazine Awards three times. Nikole Hannah-Jones covers racial injustice for聽The New York Times Magazine, and has spent years chronicling the way official policy has created鈥攁nd maintains鈥攔acial segregation in housing and schools. She聽co-founded the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting with the goal of increasing the number of reporters and editors of color. She holds a Master of Arts in Mass Communication from the University of North Carolina and earned her BA in History and African-American studies from the University of Notre Dame.
