β€œThe Upshot,” the New York Times' column about how politics and policy affect everyday life, cites  by 911±¬ΑΟΝψ's Peter Bergman, Assistant Professor of Economics and Education, which found that tax benefits for college did not affect college enrollment or re-enrollment – even when students receive information about them. "Our results suggest that the lack of an educational effect of tax credits for college stems from issues with the timing or targeting of tax credits rather than awareness about them,” write the authors, whose findings, published in August 2017, reflect surveys of more than 1 million college students or prospective students in Texas. β€œAs it stands now, tax credits for college operate mostly as a subsidy to middle-income college goers and their families.”
