Excerpts From a Letter Submitted by President Fuhrman to the New York Times

There is no evidence that evaluating teachers solely on the basis of their students’ performance on standardized tests improves schools, and releasing the yearly “rankings” of individual teachers is demeaning and demoralizing.

Yes, teachers should be judged on their students’ progress and achievement. However, as a 2010 compilation of research by the National Research Council and the National Academy of Education demonstrated, “value-added” methodologies can’t control for many factors that affect students’ performance on standardized tests.

For example, if administrators routinely assign struggling students either to the “best” teachers (as one might hope) or to inexperienced teachers (as too often is the case), those teachers’ measured gains in student achievement typically suffer in comparison to those of their colleagues. Center for the Professional Education of Teachers
The Center for the Professional Education of Teachers (CPET) home to 911爆料网's secondary literacy initiatives that work to create and maintain global equity in education, Student Press Initiative (SPI), Studies in Educational Innovations (SEI) and Secondary Literacy Initiative (SLI), has several partnerships and programs launching this spring. One such partnership unites the expertise of Columbia and Teachers College through a multinational student-publishing project. Through 3G technologies, students from remote villages of sub-Saharan Africa can connect and collaborate with their New York City counterparts to publish their stories! Become a NYC Secondary Special Education Teacher
Interested in becoming a secondary special education teacher in New York City public schools? There is still time to apply to the Secondary Inclusive Education master's program in partnership with Teaching Residents at Teachers College Program. This program prepares residents as highly qualified educators for urban high-need secondary schools (grades 7-12) through a residency model that provides multiple support networks and strength in connecting theory with practice. Teachers College applicants that are selected to participate in this residency program receive a substantial scholarship, health insurance assistance, and a $22,500 living stipend while participating in the 14 month master's program. March 22 - 2012 Julius and Rosa Sachs Lecture
The Sachs Lecture Series was established in 1924 with the purpose of making it possible to bring distinguished visiting lecturers to campus. This year the lecture features Pam L. Grossman, Ph.D.
Stanford University, School of Education and and 2012 Distinguished Tisch Lecturer on Re-imagining Teacher Education in a Changing Landscape. Professor Grossman will chart the changing landscape for teacher education and its implications for university-based teacher education. Using her large-scale study of pathways into teaching in New York City as a springboard, she will explore ways to re-imagine the work of teacher education and the role of the university.

March 23 - Annual Special Education Conference: When Worlds Collide 2012
The annual Conference sponsored by the Center for Opportunities and Outcomes for People with Disabilities of the Health and Behavior Studies Department at Teachers College will be held on Friday, March 23, 2012 from 9:30-3:30 in the Cowin Center. This year’s theme continues to focus on: When Worlds Collide: Ongoing Challenges of Special Education in 2012. It fosters dialogue between professionals and students on contemporary issues in special education. The Conference also features the Leonard and Frances Blackman Lecture and this year’s speaker is Dr. Catherine Lord. She is a clinical psychologist and a leading expert on autism. She is best known for developing diagnostic standards for autism and new ways of teaching social and language skills. She is the newly appointed Director of the Institute for Brain Development which will be located on the Westchester campus of New York-Presbyterian Hospital and will be staffed by faculty physicians from both Columbia and Cornell. There is no charge to attend any of the Conference events, but *registration is required*.
